    oh don't worry about it. I didn't mean to imply that going to see a kakapo there was forbidden because I really don't know. I was simply surprised that anybody other than people working within the Wildlife Department had seen the last Fiordland kakapo. It may or may not have been inappropriate...

    Richard Henry (who died last year) was moved from Fiordland in 1975. The last known year for kakapo in Fiordland was 1987 (three males survived until then). I hadn't known general birders had gone in to see them!!

    that is correct, but as lewis20126 says, not really any point putting them on the list because all have been commonly seen (although I haven't managed to see the darn great spotted kiwi yet)

    I've seen Stewart Island kiwi (and for what its worth, the brown kiwi has been split - quite a while ago - into three species: North Island brown, Okarito brown (rowi) and southern brown (tokoeka)).

    that's where I saw mine too (well, at Tambun), in 2009. I must admit that at the time I didn't know how sought after it was - I was just happy to see a cuckoo because cuckoo-sightings and I don't go together well! ;)
