New kid on the block ... Theron Questa

I didn't have the opportunity to compare the two side by side but, going by memory and experience, I would say the HGs are slightly brighter/more color neutral. The Questa definitely had a larger sweet spot/better edges.

No. :-) Honestly it's very subtle and only readily noticeable in comparison to a neutral or cold biased binocular.

Thanks adhoc. I think I was remembering the $1200 MSRP for the Monarch HG. P.S. I thought I saw something that the Questa was down to $375 for a limited time with the coupon code. ;)

nmason, When I wrote the statement in your quote the Nikon Monarch HG was not available. No, I have not tried it yet. There haven't been any Nikon reps at any of the birding shows I have attended recently. That may change the first week of May as the Biggest Week in American Birding is being...

adhoc, After extended use I don't take back any of my comparisons to the various Swaro models. I would certainly say it is very comparable to the SVs because of the field flattener design. If you like the big sweet spot and great edge performance of the Swaro then you will like the same...

adhoc, Sorry for the delay. I am not on the forums much on the weekends. To answer your questions: 1. I think the perception of sharpness is just that, a perception. The Questa does not have great depth of focus (not to be confused with depth of field). This means you are either perfectly on...

Nice Bella! I look forward to reading more of your and your husband's experiences with the Questa. In my experience the Questa still is the closest thing to the $2000 field flattened binoculars at a price affordable to most. I haven't found any other model that offers all of the optical...

Nix, You figured out the reason why I don't prefer the 10x as much. It would seem with this design that AMD and the subsequent rolling ball become more pronounced as you move up the magnification range. As a result the image does not look as natural in the 10x as it does in the 8x especially...

Nix, The 10x version don't impress me near as much as the 8x....and not just because of the usual 10x vs 8x differences.

Very nice review Mivenho. I thought you did an excellent job of relating your experiences with each model. Glad that you found one of the models worked for you.

Brock, We share the same taste in focusing tension. I prefer mid-range speed .... 1.25-1.75 turns .... provided the focusing tension is neither too fast or too stiff. I can live with a stiffer focusing tension if the bin has a shorter rotation ... .75 - 1 turn. What I can't stand is a really...

Bruce, I had the opportunity to compare the Questa to the Zeiss Terra ED 8x42 yesterday morning. From what I have seen online the Terra retails between $350 and $400. The Questa can be had for $425. I hate to come off as overly enthusiastic but there was no comparison. In practically every area...

That sounds like a fun comparison. Please do comment afterwards. Clive, Maybe. ;) But that will have to wait for a bit. I still have to finish the reviews for the Athlon Argos 8x36 and Opticron VGA HD 8x42.

Mivenho, I think Dennis actually answered that question for you. You just need to read between the lines. He compared a $2300 binocular to a $425 model and though his comments left the $2300 model the winner the Questa scored surprisingly close. I think that says something. Bruce, I have...

Ha! I don't follow that method of operation Brock. Once they are keepers then they are keepers.;)

Dennis, Thank you for sharing your comments. I would agree with Vespo that the better apparent low light performance is most likely the result of the choice of emphasis in colors of the transmission curve. The Therons definitely favor the warmer side of the spectrum as opposed to the colder...

It has been a few months since this thread has been active. I felt the need to revisit it as the Theron Questa 8x42 has become my primary birding glass during that time. I find the image quality exceptional for the price and the view so natural and relaxing. It offers one of those rare...

Nice catch Clive. Definitely a good start. Now if they stuck ED glass in the objective design it would be next on my list to review.

Bob, Yes, I would email Predator Optics about warranty work for the Theron models. ...and I kinda figured you didn't have any Theron models since they don't make a 7x ..... ;)

New kid on the block ... Theron Questa

Yes, that appears to be the same bin. The only difference is in the listed field of view...a 0.2 degree difference. Also, as a point of reference, their use of the term "Bak7" does not mean bk7 but is rather a glass with similar qualities to the more widely known Bak-4.

Bob, The warranty on the Questas is one year no-fault repair/replacement and lifetime manufacturer defect. Bottom line on the page below.... http://theronoptics.com/QUESTA_HD-ED_BINOCULARS.html Theron Optics is the house brand for Predator Optics. Company info for Predator Optics is...

Bob, Having owned all three it seems pretty curious that they are strikingly similar in specs and design. My guess is that either all three are made by a third party or one is/was potentially making all three designs. I do know ZR is doing OEM work so it is entirely possible they are/were...
