    Corona virus threat to birding

Saw that movie years back, not bad, but the idea that the military would enforce quarantine orders while in battle dress seemed absurd even for Hollywood. Soldiers are people too, so social cohesion is a really critical asset. Whether the US has abused that asset too much during the 2008...

    Corona virus threat to birding

Interesting information and likely correct. The firm is CureVac and its then chairman, Daniel Menichella, who is American, did participate early this month in an industry discussion of possible drugs at a White House conference. Menichella was replaced after this story came up by the founder of...

    Corona virus threat to birding

Have to wonder about this story, as I doubt Trump could know anything about vaccine candidates. Presumably he gave carte blanche to buy anything that seems promising, so some staffer went shopping, American style. It does leave a foul taste though...

    Corona virus threat to birding

Blame the government rules, airport landing slots are a huge value, (sometimes the biggest asset the carrier has) and are lost unless they get used. Corona virus threat to birding

Sadly your case is quite atypical, most younger people do not have that option. The norm in the US today is the 'gig' economy, where the work is only for that specific job, after which one returns to the unemployment pool. That bypasses all the labor protection laws, on the pretext that each...

    Corona virus threat to birding

The lockdown may save lives, but at horrendous cost, way more than any sensible calculus would support. The social damage from the removal of 13% of GNP, which is an earlier estimate of the Italian tourism sector, vastly exceeds the virus casualties. There is not only an immediate impact but...

    Corona virus threat to birding

If the system is so fragile that a single undetected carrier can break it, it is obviously futile. Meanwhile, well meaning but pointless government shutdown edicts are rendering large parts of the population idle and destitute. This cure seems worse than the disease. It may be that just...

    Corona virus threat to birding

Not sure that this is a seasonal virus. It seems to be a year round player, given that it has no trouble infecting people in Thailand and Singapore, which are pretty summery climes.

    Corona virus threat to birding

The current nCoV outbreak is still not contained and appears to be especially contagious. The CDC recommendation is to avoid crowds and close contacts, which makes travel a choice that must be weighted. How are birders reacting to this development? Tourism, which includes birders, is a massive...
