    Oh, also have a look at some woodpeckers, such as downy woodpecker. Your jelly may be attracting ants which would get a woodpecker's interest.

    Take a photo if you can. I'm betting it's a normally-black bird with a pigment irregularity (piebald leucism). Grackle, maybe? Also look up black- billed magpie, but if you saw one in Illinois, it may have had help getting there.
