Red-Breasted Sapsucker (1 Viewer)

I'm sorry this shot is not very clear. I did not have my telephoto lens on and had my camera set up for macro photography... when out of the blue I heard the sound of a woodpecker. I have grabbed my field guide and think I have this guy pegged as a red-breasted sap sucker... the only thing that has me a bit baffled is under it's throat was a brilliant yellow color ... simply vibrant. I intend on going back to the area I found him in as there was a tree close by that looked like his home. For now... I'd like help in identifying this guy.

Cheers,

Lisa

From Sibley's Guide:
"Red breasted Sapsucker subspecies are divided sharply in southern Oregon. Northern populations are slightly large, with brighter and more extensive red ending abruptly against yellow belly, little white on head and narrow rows of yellow spots on back (vs. more white spots); sexes are alike. "

Also it looks like the sun might have been adding a bit of color to your bird as well.

Thanks KC - I have Stokes Western Region field guide which is not as extensive as Sibley's. I can't wait to have my telephoto lens with me the next time!
