Hi Keith.

A dainty 1st winter female looking Herring Gull. Bill is almost Common Gull like, and quite obviously disproportionate to the head head. Pattern on all the coverts (no visible 2nd generation feathers), scapulars, tertials worn and not helpful for ID, points to Herring. Are there any other pic. on this?
Compare with these:

Hi Jan: Pics taken yesterday for comparison - look quite simillar to Keith's pic - 1w H and 1 w H 2cy I believe (ID ??)

Hi Deborah!

The one on the water looks, as you say, similar to Keith´s, and a 1st winter as well.
The flying looks a little bit older (?) such heavy wear and moult of primaries seems a little early, although argenteus (southern pop) usually moults earlier than argentatus, it could well be though, an extremely worn and early moulting individual. But as moult of primaries starts with innermost p1, and this one seems to have 3-4 new inner primaries on both wings, so not just a damage, fully grown, it is a bit odd this time of year, when usually not have started primary moult. Tail looks pale tipped from below, usually a dark band at this age. A Herring Gull It is Deborah I would say.
