Mecklenburg-Vorpommern birdwatching spots wanted (1 Viewer)

Hello,

I have lived in this areas for many years.

From Neustrelitz hot spots in Mecklenburg Vorpommern as well as Brandenburg reachable.

My special favorit is the cycling tour from Bad Wilsnack at river flootplain of Elbe to south east at lake Gülper See.
Lake Gülper See is called also petrol station of migration birds of central Europe.
Not to far from this area is also Nennhausen and Buckow where is very high chance for Great Bustard.

Also not far National Park Mueritz at lake Mueritz, National Park Untereres Odertal included lake Felchowsee and even National Park Wartha River Mouth in Poland is not to far.

Lake Galenbecker See is rather good for terns, but they will arrive end of April or begin of June.

Another interesting point is the area of "Heilige Hallen" near Feldberg, which is our oldest Fagus forest.

Overview Brandenburg

You can send me private message and we can speak at the phone.

If You can understand german language at little bit "Vogel Beobachtung in Ostdeutschland" written by Christoph Moning is quite interesting.

Best regards
Dieter

Thanks a lot Dieter

I found all locations you mentioned. We have not yet booked a hotel/B&B so we are still sure from where we will be making our daydrips. If it's going to be Neustrelitz then I am afraid the Eble tour will be a bit to far for a one day bicycle trip. Heiligen Hallen on the other hand would but just fine an within our one day limit. I think 150 KM will be our max for 1 day. I will report back once I have made a reservation so you then know from where we will be making our day trips.

In every case nationalpark lake Mueritz is easy reachable via train.
To Buckow where are possible to see Great Bustard ( train station Nennhausen ) it takes longer.
To flood plain area of Havel and Elbe + lake Guelper See ( for me best spot in Germany ) it takes longer.
Mostly I started at train station Bad Wilsnack and went to Rathenow.

Thanks again Dieter

The bad news is that I will not be going there this week. The good news is that I have planned this for may so I will have to be patient ;)

Our main goal is cycling but we have not decided on the routes yet. If we can pick some good birding spots on the way it would really be nice. Ofcourse binoculars will be within reach. We will not be traveling by train. I will get back here when we have definitly decided on when and where. Thanks again.

This time is excellent for migration birds.
Weather in the north seems quite good.

Here in South Germany is awful.

From my point of view best spot for cycling is the area of Haveland and Elbtalauen, but than main place should be north of Rathenow.

But from Neustreltz also some good spots like lake Mueritz Nationalpark.
Lake area of Feldberg also not so far.
Buy the way, even if You not cycle in an protected area north of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg Vorpommern, You can find easy 30 different birds in 2 - 3 hours.

We've finaly made a decision. Were going to Genthin tomorrow. Rathenow seems only 30 KM so well within a 1 day trip. Unfortunatelly I can't seem to find Haveland en Elbtalauen. Is this in het Gentin area?

hello!

havelland and elbtalauen are no villages, but regions - the surrounding/bottoms/meadows of the river havel and the flood plains/wetlands of the river elbe. if you are looking for a village to check maps try gülpe or strodehne or havelberg (river havel) or ringfurth (elbtalaue).

greetings, yvonne

this is nice, too:

Elbtalauen is the area about 70 km west of Berlin.
Is north of the town Rathenow, which is located on the train route Berlin to Hannover.
