Going back to 1st selection...

No2 ,I now think, shows a large Heron/Egret. With one straight leg and the other crossing over it. The amorphous yellowish blob I believe is a captured frog at an odd angle. The bill enters the frame at top left, and is contiguous with the line of the frog's body. The greenish and dark cast to the legs leads me to surmise...

No 2 Great White Egret...

Argh! Which one did I get right???
Another stab...

1. Stick on Little Crake
2. Jackdaw
3. Herring Gull
4. Gadwall female.
5. Imm Night Heron

ok here are the birds no. 1-4 from the first round that were guessed correct.

pic no. 5 (round 1) still not complete ;)

1 - Night Heron
2 - House Martin
3 - Dalmatian Pelican
4 - Mallard
5 - Marsh Harrier

zero o:)

phil, sorry, your first guess also was a zero (my old confusion between these two sp. in engl. names: garganey <--> gadwall), now you got female gadwall right: here it is.

one sp. in pic 5 (round 1) was correct too.

some clues for round 2:
- 1 german name has sth. to do with the familiy in which phil's guess is (now very easy!)
- 2 wing shape in this pic deceiving (that's why i took this shot, haha), now let's see in which direction your guesses go...
- 3 somebody was very close
- 5 is "the species" in the danube delta that always tricks you from a distance (sometimes you think it's a night heron, sometimes you think it's a grey headed woodie etc...)

points round 1

got it, phil. pic of the 2 cormorant sp. attached.

here's the points for round 1:

macs = 4 (3 pt. for correct species, 1 point for vague location)
phil carter = 1 for getting night heron right
phil baber = 4 (although a bit generous given since i'd already confirmed there had been named 4 sp. correct)
cristian = 2 (1 for GCG, 1 for danube delta)
jonny721 = 0

phil, i didn't want to hear the dutch name for a relative of little crake; the german name of the mystery bird bears in it the familiy name in which little crake is. now! :-C

here's a bit more of the harder ones in round two:
