The month got off to a good start with 73 species being recorded on new year's Day the main highlights being 3 Common Gull including the ringed bird, a female Stonechat in Brownies, 4 Goldeneye on swan pool, Peregrine over the centre, Great White Egret flew east over Forge Mill, Little Egret was on the River, 2 Oystercatcher on the Slipway, the Adult Yellow Legged Gull was on Swan pool and a Woodcock was flushed near the Centre. On the 2nd a Mediterranean Gull was on the island, the 3rd gave us a very poor Snipe count with only 12 Snipe and 2 Jack Snipe in the Marsh and a Raven was seen to flyover, on the 5th the Yellow Legged Gull and Mediterranean Gull could both be seen from the Hide. On the 10th a female Pintail was on Forge Mill and two male Pheasant over Brownies, the 12th gave us a Shelduck and a Great Black Backed Gull on Forge Mill the Gull later being seen at Watery Lane, on the 16th the female Pintail was joined by a male and the Stonechat was still in Brownies, we had a third Oystercatcher turn up on the 17th, the 19th gave us a male Red Crested Pochard on Swan Pool, on the 20th a Red Kite was seen near the entrance to the RSPB. A Great White Egret was see again on the 23rd, the Mediterranean Gull and the Stonechat where still with us on the 28th. Some of the best counts being:- 529 Black Headed Gull, 400 Wood Pigeon, 200+ Canada Geese,196 Coot, 150 Jackdaw, 103 Tufted duck, 70-100 Ring Necked Parakeets, 100+ Starling's, 100+ Fieldfare, 85 Mallard, 58 Magpie, 41 Pochard, 39 Snipe, 34 Lesser Black Backed Gull, 31 Goosander, 30 Grey Heron, 30 Siskin, 30 Redpoll, 27 Moorhen, 27 Lapwing, 25 Mute Swan, 25 Linnet, 16 Herring Gull, 14 Teal, 9 Barnacle Geese, 8 Wigeon, 7 Meadow pipit, 7 Goldeneye, 5 Water Rail, 5 Tawny Owl, 4 Oystercatcher and 3 Greylag. By the end of the month we'd clocked up 87 species.
