First butterfly of 2020 (2 Viewers)

Very pleased to see my first local Clouded Yellow for at least 4 years this morning in the country park down the road.. Initially picked it up in flight but then spent some time sitting on some Alsike Clover. Put a spring in my step especially as I have been across to Europe where I often see plenty.

Moving on to a local golf course to check out the ponds for Odonata I quickly found my first 2 Marbled Whites of the season. A species that has become locally common in recent years- even had my first (brief) garden visit last year.

Nice. And can probably only dream of a Marbled White down this way.

First Meadow Brown and Large Skippers over the last week or two.

Just remembered, first Small Tortoiseshell of the year this week: Maz found it on the ceiling of our bedroom! No idea how it got there.

Imagine how I feel having moved back to Notts!

I've gone from having a local patch with eight Fritillary species, Moorland Clouded Yellow, Purple and Lesser Purple Emperor, Camberwell Beauty and Poplar Admiral, to getting excited by a Speckled Wood!

We don't have a single, extant species of Fritillary in Notts.

Wasn't expecting my first Dark Green Fritillary of the year to be in Bristol today, where it was a totally unexpected patch tick (to the point of pondering its origin).

Locally had a few new ones over the last couple of weeks including White-letter & Purple Hairstreaks, Ringlet, Small Skipper, Silver-washed Fritillary, White Admiral & Purple Emperor, bringing me to 32 species all from the London area.

I was totally spoiled in Russia with what I had on my doorstep, would kill for a patch like yours, here!
