Hi all

Regular visitor to Italy and ex resident but never seen these before. Day flying and very obvious. Any pointers?

Thanks

O

Palm Moth (Paysandisia archon). A South American species accidentally introduced to Southern Europe, where it's now a pest (though I'd love to see one!)

Cheers
Paul

I guess strictly speaking Palm Borer would refer to the caterpillar (as with Cotton Boll Worm, etc.). It's a serious pest, even affecting 'native' palms (i.e. Dwarf, or Fan, Palms).

Does nobody call them “surreptitious” these days? Shame, though I did wonder where it came from. Larvae secretly at work in palm stems? (Saw my first in southern France yesterday)
