How can I stop this programme wanting to download my photos every time I put a card or device into my computer?

You have to go into the Organizer part of the package. Go to Edit > Preferences > and select 'Camera or Card Reader' - then untick the option to 'Auto launch Adobe Photo Downloader...' That should do it.

Never did stop that annoying trait in my Lightroom 1.0 no matter what I unticked

Annoying isn't it, bloody thing starting up everytime anything is plugged into a USB port
