What is the ID and status of “long-billed” Crested Larks at Aousserd?
The blog-post includes three high-quality photographs of “long-billed” Crested Larks taken at Aousserd last month.
Apart from the ID, I have some questions like why the birds just to the south in Atar area, WC Mauritania, are treated with the nominate subspecies of Maghreb Lark? (both by IOC who split the species and by HBW Alive who haven’t yet).
The sole Mauritanian sample in the study of Guillaumet et al. (2006, 2008) didn’t belong to that group. Is this treatment not based on this study, but on the references (which I don’t have) that mentioned the “long-billed” Crested Larks in this area? If this is the case, then the bill length alone is not a good predictor as is the case of the birds from Tunisia.
Thanks for your help!
