A few more pics of Pectoral Sandpiper again today. At the orginal site. No sign of the second bird at the other location.
Colour-ringed Sanderling at Omey from a few days ago, feeding on what appears to a Sand-eel? Same individual present at Omey Strand last Autumn.
A few shots from Claddagh Beach to Mutton Island Causeway yesterday.
Arctic Skua which I had down as a Great Skua until I was rightly corrected. Obvious when you see the detail.
At Rahasane today. Buff-breasted Sandpiper with a flock of Golden Plover and Lapwing. Is that a new one for the year list? Also 9 Ruff and 6 Knot which were a first for me there. Also a decent flock of Godwits, few Dunlin, a Greenshank and a few Redshank. Looks really good for waders at moment.
There was a colour ringed Godwit there a few days ago and I saw it again today.
Went out to see the Pec at Doonloughan last night too. Really close views.
At Rahasane today.
2 Buff-breasted sandpipers just to right of the middle gate, 2 Curlew Sandpipers, Kingfisher, 10 Ruff, Greenshank, 4 Knot and usual others.
Oranmore (at castle) 2 Kingfisher and a ringed BH Gull.
At Rusheen, 4 Knot, 2 ringed BH Gull.
Nimmo's, 2 Arctic Skua (one adult and one juv) and a Ring-billed Gull.
Last week on the 16th I got some pics of a Ringed Plover with a few rings. Sent to some of the ringing projects and got the following reply from John Middelton. Hi Tom The ringed plover that you saw, was ringed by us, when it was a chick on 16/07/2008 at Snettisham, Norfolk 52.52N 00.26E TF6433, many thanks for sending your sighting. Do you have the Irish Grid ref for Claddagh Beach? Cheers John
Spent over 8 hours over two days at Rahasane Turlough and still dipped on the Buff-breasted Sandpiper. Had to small juv Ruff which had me think I had the Buff-beasted :eek!: but not this time.
At Rahasane yesterday,
1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper and 1 Pectoral Sandpiper. The Buff B was in the same place as the other days just to the right of the middle gate and the Pec was with a flock of about 100 Godwit, 2 Ruff and 10 Dunlin at the Kilcolgan end of the turlough.
At Kilcaimin yesterday and today 1 Spotted Redshank.
Hopefully this weekend will be another yank one after all the good birds in Kerry and on the Mullet today.
Finally got to see the Buff-breasted Sandpiper this evening. Very elusive and feeding in the long grass would stay hidden for 10-15mins at a time. Even when it did appear all I was seeing was its head for most of the time.
Best today out Ballyconneely way at Doonloughaun was a new Pectoral Sandpiper and best of all a Coconut on the strandline:eek!:. Hope thats not the best Nearctic vagrant I see here this Autumn (it ain't no Little Blue Heron that's for sure, yesterday was the 1 year anniversary btw.).
If this high pressure system doesn't take a hint and disappear shortly it'll be a very poor Autumn for Yanks.
Nice shots Tom. Digiscoping flight shots now! What's next. Also the shots of the Dowitcher would make you think it hadn't spent 95% ot the time asleep with the bill hidden.
GW Egret at Rahasane again about two hours ago. It had moved towards the Craughwell end but was visible from the area around the middle gate. Also a troublesome juvenile Peregrine doing it's best to frighten everything in sight. Good numbers of Godwits, Golden Plover, Lapwing, Wigeon and Teal still present. Also at least 5 Ruff, at least 12 and a Knot yesterday.
The Egret yesterday makes up for all the trips out to the Curraghline to try to see the bird there last winter.
Dermot had a Buff-B out on Inishmore yesterday at Trawmore but much quieter out there so far today.
