Hi Kenneth. This certainly looks a good candidate. I have compared your image with the image here http://www.gwydir.demon.co.uk/insects/syrphini2.htm#scripta and it certainly looks the same.

Thanks for that Steve. Clearly it's a female (judging by the length of the abdomen) and the URL you have linked to says that the females are hard to distinguish. So I'd better put it down as Sphaerophoria sp. (I'm not really keen to get 'voucher speciments').
