Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas (7 Viewers)

Oystercatcher over Coney just.

Nice little arrival of Willow Warblers this morning - at least 4 singing males scattered around the Salwarpe area.

During a late morning on Wednesday I noted two egrets in the tree the other side of the river by the tin shed. See the very poor picture below, they could be carrier bags actually based upon this evidence. ;)

250+ Sand Martins roosted this evening - they first appeared high up in a large seething ball - an impressive sight.

Lots of hirundines over Westwood earlier - including a few House Martins.

Two pairs of Gadwall were in the Tapenhall area this morning - they're very much a spring / early summer bird on the patch.

The damp, cold weather this evening was not conducive to birdsong - but the Sedge Warbler gave a brief burst.

A Snipe flew out of the reedbed.

Most of the regular birds recorded this weekend, including Water Rail, Kestrel, Buzzard, Yellowhammers, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Coal Tit, Reed Buntings, Meadow Pipits, skylarks, Linnets, Bullfinches, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, etc. Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs now abundant and widespread.

Cuckoo singing this morning at Salwarpe and Ladywood (possibly the same bird).

4 singing Willow Warblers and lots of Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs.

Only c150 sand Martins roosted last night plus 2 Swallows.

Several Snipes flew from the reedbed last night and this morning.

2 Gadwall present at Coney yesterday morning and again (flew over) in the evening.

1 late (ish) Fieldfare over.

Grass snakes in Salwarpe

Two beautiful young grass snakes are currently loitering under a wooden plank in my garden at the top end of Salwarpe village. They are about 20cm long.

With the warm weather, keep your eyes open at Coney as there are some big ones down there, I have a shed skin from there that is 88cm long.

Enjoy

A nice, mild evening - Sedge Warbler and several Reed Warblers singing in the reedbed in front of the viewing screen.

8 Sand Martins flew over but didn't roost.

1 House Martin and c40 Linnets at Copcut.

Pipistrelle and 2 Noctules over Coney at dusk.

Grasshopper Warbler singing between Porter's Mill and Mildenham Mill in scrub and reeds between river Salwarpe and Droitwich canal. Sedge also.

Whinchat still at Tapenhall fishing pool - looks like a dull first year male with just a small amount of orange on the breast.

Three more Wheatears Copcut - Middleton Bank area - 2 males and a female in this group.

Correction - at least 4 - 3 of which are males.
