Lovely but frustrating ramble all over the Valley very early this morning. One of the first birds was a skulking but very vocal common whitethroat which surprised me a bit feeling somewhat early. But as I was watching the whitethroat, I saw a silhouette in the distance perched in a tree. The shape was spot on for cuckoo but the sun rising behind it and no call meant I couldn't be sure. I took a few steps to the side to get round a bush to get more favourable light but it went as soon as it knew it had been spotted. It flew/dropped straight into other thicker foliage a short distance away never to be seen again. Immensely frustrating because I've never seen (or heard) one in the Valley.

Other birds included steady numbers of sand martins when it clouded over, at least 3 oystercatchers, little ringed plover, peregrine, loads of blackcaps and willow warblers and 4 greylags on Forge Mill.
