A friend says it is Tree Pipit I quote him "Streaks on back and flansks are fine for a tree pipit, the colour of legs not usual for tree pipit but doesn't go against tree pipit either, leg color in tree pipit varies from pink, pale pink, yellowish to brown(less seen).."

I had objections about the legs - the undersides look a bit buffish and the streaks less fine.....

Surely a Kittiwake! I couldn't find the species when flicking through my field guide to the birds of the Indian Subcontinent just now!

Nothing in (the admittedly now rather dated) HBW for any records from the subcontinent either

Borit Lake is in Hunza valley near the Chinese border - 2000-3000m above sea level. I know at first I thought Common Gull. What about the Grebe?

From wikipedia, 2600 m altitude, and saline - which (with the cold at that altitude) ought to keep a Kittiwake reasonably content. Extraordinary record, though! First for Pakistan, I guess?

Nice to know that when we get rarities from the region (Desert Wheatear, Hume's Leaf Warbler, etc.), it isn't all one-way traffic, you get some of our common birds too :t:

I am born in Lancashire and live thee but my parents originate from Pakistan and I keep in touch with birders from there. They are birder photographers more than actual birders. My first reaction was Common Gull even though the black head markings did not look like ours. The guy in question mentioned what about Black-Legged Kittiwake. I did say it crossed my mind but way out of range - all that land? I checked and it was and then I posted here just in case i had was, letting my mind run wild. Slavs are a rare bird too. 4 records known - most recent in 1986. two in one day.

The photographer in question took some shots of Siskins - which are a national fist there. Borit is a great place for passage birds on way north including red-necked Phalarope, greylag, most duck species, waders. Good numbers of passerines there - who knows what passes through!

Are there any other photos of the Kittiwake? It's an amazing record. Must be thousands of miles from any previous record.
