Can anyone ID this hornet/wasp that was firmly attached to the beetle and appeared to be attempting to kill it.

Do wasps return to their nests the following year?, I've had a nest in the side of my house this year and my wife hasn't been too happy about it, I said they probably wouldn't return if we left them alone, they certainly haven't bothered me.

The colony will die out during the winter, only the queen will survive and she starts a new nest somewhere else. Very rare for them to build near an old nest.

Just to clarify: only the newly produced queens overwinter to found new nests the following spring. The original founding queen also dies in the autumn along with the workers and males she produced. Queens live approx one year, workers and males a few weeks.

Old nests are not normally re-used as they are often full of parasites etc, but new nests may be built next to old ones if suitable nesting sites are in short supply the following year.

Thanks for that guys, my wife will be pleased with that. I must admit they haven't bothered us at all in spite of their close proximity, live and let live if you can.
