blackbutt

  1. Good move

    Good move

We then went back to the railway museum in Blackbutt, which worked out for us, sort of! For thereon the corner of the museum building was the pair of Red-rumped Parrots; but I messed up the pictures somewhat, but here it is as a record shot.
  2. A local special

    A local special

Then we were one a real hunt for the Red-rumped Parrot as Hans was determined to try and find one for me, when suddenly one landed on the telegraph wire not too far from where the Dollarbird was!!! Sadly, again the light was not good from where we were, but at least I saw one and got a shot of it.
  3. Dollar in the blue

    Dollar in the blue

On our way back home we drove around Blackbutt again and found this Dollarbird near the golf course. Such pretty birds when the light gets them right, but didn't show too well in my pictures.
  4. Not keen

    Not keen

This Australian Brushturkey couldn't have been less interested in clementines, as he walked straight past it. This picture shows their tail shape very well I think.
  5. Off to bed

    Off to bed

Eventually Hans managed to get the information he was after, so off we set to another area at the back of the town and waited. Eventually we were rewarded with a flock of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos flying over on their way to roost for the night. Not the best of flight shots as they were...
  6. Alone

    Alone

Not the best of images, but I had few sightings of Straw-necked Ibis on my travels. This one was on the far side of the next paddock and I took it while Hans was still chewing the cud with his new-found friends. I did, once, come across a small flock, but mostly I only saw them alone.
  7. Waving in the New Year

    Waving in the New Year

We left Ravensbourne Park and headed for the small town of Blackbutt, as Hans had heard whisperings!! We made some enquiries and were sent to a farm on the outskirts to talk to a lady there. When we arrived, she was out but Hans had a long talk with her husband and a friend of his; while I...
  8. Evening visitors

    Evening visitors

Hans had been out after dark every evening since my arrival, but I'd not questioned it of course. This day the reason was revealed. He knew there were Bettong around, but they only come out after dark.... and Hans had tempted them with some bread (at least I think it was bread - wasn't too...
  9. Outback Taromeo

    Outback Taromeo

Before it got dark, I climbed up the hill at the back of the property to take a view of the land and thought you might like to see an overview of Hans & Judy's property. This is where they lived when I visited them, but they've moved now. On the right is the dam he refers to, which he dug out...
  10. In the shade

    In the shade

The sun was really getting low now, and behind the trees; this meant the drive where this Common Bronzewing was pecking about was completely in the shade. Sadly that meant there was now pretty wing patch to see!!
  11. Muddled....

    Muddled....

.... and who can blame Maned Ducks for that!!! They've two other common names, one of which is Maned Goose! So people can't decide what family they belong to LOL. Hence the scientific name of Chenonetta is a monotypic genus, meaning no other species shares it. Lengthening shadows meant the...
  12. She was there too!

    She was there too!

It seems the female Superb Fairywren was never far away from hubby, for she was busy foraging on the lawn too. TTTW
  13. Fast movers

    Fast movers

Even on continuous mode, it can be hard to freeze an image of a Superb Fairywren, with that long tail, it's hard to get a picture with both the front and back end still. They're really very fidgety on occasion LOL. I got this male through my bedroom window, which looked out onto a different...
  14. A tasty brownie

    A tasty brownie

After lunch I explored the grounds round the house and for some reason these rather plain Brown Honeyeaters really appealed to me. At least, I think they're attractive!
  15. Pretty boy

    Pretty boy

I found the Rufous Fantails an absolute joy. Not only rather pretty but also cute and amusing to watch. This one did a little display for me on that dead branch. I only saw these in Queensland, unlike their grey cousins.
  16. Dusky

    Dusky

I took this Torresian Crow in the fast fading light but couldn't resist giving it a go.
  17. Getting wet

    Getting wet

It doesn't really look like it in this picture, but it was absolutely pouring with rain when I took it!! Thought this male Superb Fairywren didn't seem to be too bothered by it LOL. Pretty, isn't he.
  18. Clean-up Squad

    Clean-up Squad

I think the whole population of Double-barred Finches in the area descended to clear up all these seeds LOL When you see them, they're really small and look like mice scurrying around. Saturday Fun
  19. Browed and barred

    Browed and barred

A pair of Red-browed Finches appeared, along with their distant cousins, the ever-present Double-barred Finches. Quite a difference in size too.
  20. Pretty face

    Pretty face

Stunning blue make-up on these guys don't you think LOL A Blue-faced Honeyeater decided to hang out on the rotary drier, but he had to move as Judy and I had lots of washing to do following our trip away.
  21. Tranquil

    Tranquil

Quiet descended with the arrival of a Peaceful Dove. Sweet little doves these, and when I say small, they are smaller than our Collared Doves.
  22. Colourful

    Colourful

It seems a while since I showed you a Rainbow Lorikeet; this one sitting on a fence post trying to decide whether to come into the garden!
  23. Itchy look out post

    Itchy look out post

I had a wander round the grounds to see what I might have missed during our morning in the forest. Here was a Torresian Crow sitting on top of a termite mound. Obviously a good vantage point though..... Saturday Fun
  24. Pied

    Pied

A female Magpie-Lark seemed to be rather thirsty.... but did I tell you that the weather was unseasonably warm, even for Australia!!!? Hans had a nearly full time job topping up the numerous water bowls.
  25. Quiet for once

    Quiet for once

Back at home there was a Noisy Friarbird having a drink.
