Thought I would post one more shot before I am down for a couple of weeks. We are having our 150th Civil War reeactment at work, expecting 3,000 reenactors and about 50,000 visitors for the weekend of March 21 & 22. So this last week and an half will be very long hours and busy. Keep the...
  3. Carolina Wren taking turn at feeder

Carolina Wren taking turn at feeder

This Wren took its turn at the feeder while the Downy Woodpecker waited from a nearby branch (next post). This is most likely one of the pair of Wrens that has been spending cold nights in the old swallow nest on my porch.
  4. They took turns!

    They took turns!

After seeing so many birds fighting at the feeders this winter, it was heartening to observe this Downy Woodpecker and Carolina Wren actually taking turns this morning! We had 5 inches of snow yesterday, but today was clear and sunny, melting some of the snow, despite the temperature remaining...

    Carolina Wren at feeder

After enjoying the peanut-suet for several minutes on Saturday afternoon, this Wren yielded the feeder to a Red-Bellied Woodpecker. Afterwards, a Downy Woodpecker arrived and ate for a couple of minutes. But the Wren decided he wanted more. He returned and chased the Downy off the feeder (see...

    Wren v. Downy

A frightful shot, I know, but the Carolina Wren (right) chased the female Downy Woodpecker (left) off the feeder just so he could have a few bites!

Warning: This feeder is off limits!

The Mockingbirds were guarding the feeder yesterday morning, but had left by noon. This Carolina Wren chased a peaceful female Downy Woodpecker off the feeder and then proceeded to gorge himself. Here he is daring anyone else to come to the feeder!

    Carolina Wren, juvenile

I hadn't seen these Carolina Wrens all summer until they started appearing around my driveway a couple of mornings ago. This one appears to be a juvenile. There was another one with it, but I couldn't see if that one was a juvenile or not.
