After two unsuccessful attempts during the last weeks to see migrating dotterels, I had more luck today. Came across a little group of 10 individuals. Always a thrill to see these beautiful plovers.

    Dotterel

Another of the birds seen yesterday. Six in total were giving very close views at times as they fed amongst the burnt heather. A marvellous experience as they wandered within a few metres totally unconcerned about our presence sat on the heather.

    Friendliest dotterel

We spotted it (i.e. it spotted us first, I guess) from 100 metres, and it slowly made its way to us, spending in all some 40 minutes in our company (until we left). It sat on my young son's leg, pecked at his mountain boots... Extraordinary experience...

    Juvenile Dotterel

Eurasian Dotterel juv bird at Kessingland in September 2003. As soon as I laid on the ground it trotted over and used me as a wind-break. It dozed against my hip for 20 minutes or so. I was able to use a 20mm lens on my EOS 1Ds (full frame sensor) to get some shots of it with the wide flat...
