From this, and shots of the bird perched, I'm not quite sure it's in the best of health (the head looks a bit of a mess). On the other hand it seems to have been feeding and flying OK. Just possibly it's in very late moult (??). Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well. John

    American goldfinch

Connecticut residents, including our feathered friends, look forward to the annual sunflower blooms. As folks from all over descend on the fields for selfies, birds like this American goldfinch come to feast on the fall seeds. This is Auger's Field in North Branford, Connecticut. Of their many...

    The Flasher-Part Three.

If there are is anyone still following the saga of how I developed my system for using flash to photograph small garden birds, this post should at last give the secret away. Warning. It gets a bit complicated. I had struggled with using the flash on reduced power, as in spite of it working on...

    Goldfinch brigthtens my day

Hope you don't mind a little color correction I did here to highlight the bird... I really like the symbolism of this picture: the appearence of the bird brigtens up otherwise dull and monotonous day.

    Goldfinch's Breakfast

Goldfinches seem to enjoy larch and pine seeds. This spring there are many of them in my area but usually they're sitting too high to get a good angle.

    Backyard Goldfinch

This year there are many goldfinches in my backyard, usually they are sitting high on larch or pine trees but sometimes I'm lucky to see them close enough to take a good picture. This one looks particularly curious =)

    Goldfinch with style

I wanted to produce an artistic shot of a goldfinch that echoed a Japanese water colour. I chose the perch to provide a curved “leading line” up to the bird and chose the background colours to complement the bird. The background is actually a poster made of a photo of out of focus bushes. I had...

    Goldfinch Mating Dance

Unfortunately I don't have a video, as I didn't have my phone on me, but wanted to share anyway - had an amazing view of a goldfinch performing a mating dance on my clothes line today! Full on walking from side to side, head bobbing, and impressive tail swinging. I didn't even realise they could...
