This Hazel Grouse was also a lifetime lifer for me, although I've heard up through the years that they're not infrequently seen in the woods just east of us. This shot is from my second visit to his territory, which is just a couple hundred meters from the cabin where we often stop for cinnamon...

    Escort

One more shot of the Hazel Grouse, here passing a patch of snow as he escorted us to the border of his territory. And Ove, I think this bird has been using the same territory for a couple of years, so once the pandemic is over I'd be happy to take you up there ... on the condition that you show...

I know I haven't browsed yet. Was out birding yesterday evening until 8pm, then editing pics into the wee hours. Now I have to run downtown to do this month's blood tests. But couldn't wait to share last night's lifer. I'd been up there looking for him once before. Got to the right spot, but no...

Finally a perfect sunny weekend in Trondheim and everyone's out to the lakes, beaches or the mountains. We saw this male hazel grouse crossing a path in the forest and stopped to take photos. But the grouse kept circling us and came a little bit closer every time. After 15 minutes or so, we...

    New lifer - Hazel grouse

After literally combing through several kilometers of the forest, I stopped to check a call of a great tit. After few minutes I realized that it was flying around something that looked like a wasp's nest. I zoomed in with the camera and found this well camouflaged Hazel grouse sitting still on...

This was taken in late afternoon down in the ravine - no light: 1/50 second handheld, ISO1600 that is more like iso2500 as I accidently had set exposure compensation to -2/3 steps. But many birds are more active in evenings, so what can you do...?

    Hazel Grouse

Due to repeated mistakes by one of my customers, my trip to ngermanland in northern Sweden was delayed. Also the water heating and ventilation system broke down in my house, forcing me to a lot of extra work instead of bird photography. Anyway I visited some protected old forests with pine...

When is very cold, Hazel Grouses are digging inside the snow and they make a tunnel where they are when they are not eating. Inside the snow are about 0 C, when outside is -30 C. Also Capercaillies, Black Grouses, Willow Grouses and even bullfinches do that also.
