Quick report from 1st day in San Diego. Must post fast before I run out of power down here by the pool where the WiFi reception is best. Joined a local Audubon outing that I found on line. 3 hours of birding around Santee Lakes, 54 species observed (not all by me, but this was the group total)...
This sparrow gets its name from its melodious song, which resembles those of the lark family. Not the best of photos but I only see them a couple times a year.

As I think this photo is a better representative of the Lark Sparrow I posted yesterday, I am posting this one for ducbucln who was concerned about how close they looked to a female Black-headed Grosbeak.
An endemic bird of the California, So. Sierra Mnt.
They have a very complicated song, and a variety of vocalizations. They tend not to congrigate with other birds while feeding, stay in localized flocks, while on the ground.
This was a good year for this species; many fledgings. The streaking in the chin, neck and chest regions denotes a 1s year bird. After moulting these streaks will be gone, replaced by a single, diamond shapped spot , center of chest
