pelagic cormorant

  1. pelagic cormorant

    pelagic cormorant

I thought there was something different about this slender beauty. When I got home I was pleased to learn it was different than the more common double-crested cormorant.
  2. Pelagic Cormorant

    Pelagic Cormorant

A bit of a misnomer, this species is usually seen close to shore. Notice the small head barely larger than its neck. This one is starting to acquire breeding plumage showing red skin at the gape and iridescent colors to the feathers. Unlike most birds, cormorants have wettable feathers...

    Same bird, other profile

Another shot of the same Pelagic Cormorant, still working his/her way along the edge of the pier. Did a lot of diving, but I didn't see him/her catch anything, unless the fish were so small they were swallowed before he/she even came up from a dive.
  12. Pelagic in the Bay

    Pelagic in the Bay

We're nearing the end of my 2017 US trip. This is from the next-to-last day. First I drove to the Rosie the Riveter National Memorial. It's at a part of the Kaiser Shipyards where my parents worked during WWII building "liberty ships". I had some archive materials my Mom had kept that...
  13. Beggar

    Beggar

Juv pelagic clinging to the cliff-face, begging newly arrived parent for food.
  14. Red

    Red

The Brandt's's blue throat pouches can often be recognized even outside of breeding season, but the red lores of Pelagic Cormies are pretty discreet. Sometimes all I can see is that I can't see any blue (Brandt's) or yellow (Double-crested) ... but then I don't always trust my vision, especially...
  15. Butt patches

    Butt patches

Pelagic Cormorants also sport white bits during breeding season, but lower on their backs than the Brandt'ses, more like the latest fashion in rear pockets on jeans ;). And I also noted that they're not monochrome black, as I usually perceived them. This one was certainly showing quite a bit of...

This guy was perched in the pillars that help maintain the ferry in the terminal, I was trying to take pictures of the birds in the water beside the ferry when my son pointed this guy out to me. What a find.

Cormorant studies in oil on panel 12x16

Pelagic cormorants are nesting now at Bodega Head, and a lot of fledglings have just begun to fish. I can sit for hours observing them and all the activity. I never tire of all the different forms they take. I did these sketches directly with the brush, no pre drawing, trying to get more...
