This Zebra Finch seems to be out of his area somewhat, as they're not supposed to be found in coastal areas. I've just realised that this is subspecies T.g. castanotis, which may be split as Chestnut-eared Finch,
  2. Wanderer

    Wanderer

The last visitor before lunch was this Zebra Finch. You may remember me telling you it was a bit of a conundrum, as they're not found in that corner of Western Australia, the nearest populations being over 100 kms away. We quizzed a family nearby, who had an aviary of assorted birds, but they...

    Strange

We had some incredible views on our drive around Torndirrup along with some lovely flowers too. We visited the Historic Whaling Station and had a very tasty lunch there, before going off for yet more exploration of that peninsula. When we got home the enigmatic Zebra Finch was waiting to check...

We cut short our trip to Port Augusta by one day because it was going to be too hot to bird, only to find we'd just beaten the lockdown in Adelaide by a few hours!

    Dozing off

I'm sure he is... with his eyes half closed!! I'm guess the white shoulder spot was actually a reflection off some glass. It's surprised what you don't notice at the time you take a picture, isn't it.
  24. In the shadows

    In the shadows

The puzzling Zebra Finch then arrived to try his luck with the water. For those that don't know (or remember) this guy was a puzzle as he shouldn't have been in the area, their natural range is a hundred or so kms away. They do occur in Western Australia, just not in this corner where Albany is.
  25. Why Zebra?

    Why Zebra?

Not quite sure why they got this name, as they're more spotty than stripey I think LOL Back at home after a lovely afternoon exploring the Torndirrup NP, this was the first bird waiting to greet us.
