  1. Pelagic Cormorant

    Pelagic Cormorant

A bit of a misnomer, this species is usually seen close to shore. Notice the small head barely larger than its neck. This one is starting to acquire breeding plumage showing red skin at the gape and iridescent colors to the feathers. Unlike most birds, cormorants have wettable feathers...

  12. Pelagic Cormorant

    Pelagic Cormorant

One of several birds fishing behind the safety of the harbour walls at Choshi. These birds tend to lounge around most of the day with the 1000's of guls, making a nice distraction while trying to pick out the odd unusual gull from the mass of commoner ones.

    Pelagic Cormorant

Double-crested Cormorants are common in my area. I had to take a trip from south Puget Sound out to the Olympic Peninsula to find this Pelagic. I love the sheen of his feathers.

    Flying away

This is my first 'action-shot' of a bird; not very good, but that's what practice is for. This Pelagic Cormorant had been swimming not too far from me before it lifted out of the water and took off.
