Knocking Hoe

Still plenty going on at and around Knocking Hoe reserve at the eastern edge of the Chilterns. Lucky to have these 2 beauties about a 45 min walk from my front door! Autumn Lady's Tresses and the hard to spot, Green Flowered Helleborine. Many thanks to Phil Rhodes for the heads up on these two.

ALT at Greenham Common looking good today, hundreds of them and mostly in prime condition.

ALT in the New Forest

ALT at Wiverley Plain and Beaulieu Airfield in the New Forest are looking good.
The ones on Wilverley Plain are in particularly fine form and there are literally thousands of spikes in various stages of flower.

There are also quite a few Field Gentians in flower on the northern edge of the lawn near to where the heather starts to come in (Thanks Chris).

Just wondering whether there are any ALT sites in the North Yorkshire / Dales / Durham region?

Any help would be appreciated as we are hoping to holiday in the area for a week.

I'm going to have a look for ALT at Box Hill today - I saw some there about ten years ago and have not been back since. I'd love to find a Chiltern site too.

I counted 108 in flower there on the 20th. Interesting the difference a few weeks can make, as on the 9th I counted just 5!

Martyn, Jack Scout in Silverdale, Cumbria is the nearest location I know. This is only 40mins drive from the NW Dales and has wonderful coastal scenery. There were plenty of ALT there last year at the southern edge of the site, on the path nearest the sea. Dave

The ALTs in the New Forest are indeed doing exceptionally well this year, Adrian. I was there on a rather damp Wednesday this week and, in common with others posting recently noted that there had been a dramatic increase in numbers visible compared to my previous visit two weeks previously. There are certainly several thousand flowering at present. In places on the Plain they are extremely dense, it's easy to count 50 in one 1m2 quad: and it's a huge area in total! Strangely at that locality they rarely occur in more than pairs of spikes, but I've noticed that they are much more often clustered in tight groups of up to seven flower spikes on the airfield...

ALT Box Hill

I didn't really count yesterday but I would have thought well over a hunded. Some nice groups of two and three. You can't miss them as they are on the main path that runs down the slope. People have been walking on them and they bounce right back! The ones on the path where the grass is short are taller and the bottom florets already going over, but the ones hidden in the longer grass are looking really good.

ALTs Silverdale area N Lancs

30+ at Jack Scout today and just a single spike at Silverdale Lots field. Did not check the area near Arnside Knott but there were only a very few there last year.

I saw a number of ALTs on Great Orme today. They weren't present in great numbers, but seemed to be flowering in a wider area than I saw them last year

Lindisfarne

Hi all,
Will any of the Helleborine species found on Lindisfarne still be in bloom by now, or am I too late?
I happen to be passing next Tuesday so will probably pop in anyway to grab some landscape shots but would be doubly great if there are any orchids still out!

The season for orchids is now pretty much completely over (though not necessarily for our rarest!). I think even most Autumn Lady's-tresses will be past their best by now.
