2015 UK Orchids (2 Viewers)

Autumn Lady’s-tresses at Dawlish Warren by far the best year for these by a long way. Just starting to go over now but still lots in good condition.

End of another orchid year, my first as an active on the forum. Thanks to all especially those who helped with specific advice on sites who made the year even richer.

I have had notification of a scientific paper with an in-depth look at how orchid flowers, both UK and tropical, can mutate to new flower forms. It is long, very scientific, and uses many many words that are unfamiliar. However, the discussion and conclusions have some interesting points, and there are some nice pictures too. And it does have a catchy title. Click for the full on-line version.

Hi All

Sorry to jump on the back of this thread with an information request, but I just wanted to reach the people who maybe able to help. Does anybody have information on good areas of Sicily to find orchids? If anybody has a trip report or advice on general areas that have been productive in the past, that will help me to hit the ground running when I arrive in early April, I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks

Chris

HI there loads of ophrys species and naked man orchid on road up to Erice village in the North West if you are going there in April also lots of ophrys and serapias on the walk up to amphiteathre at Segesta in the North west. I have to combine a bit of culture to keep my wife interested but both are wonderful spots with lovely views and loads of orchids Hope that helps

Also anyone know any good sites in Monte Gargano Italy? -I am off there late April staying Monte St Angelo

I went there mid April 2014, and found many sites, though my tour across the peninsula was spoiled by a car failure!

You may spot many orchids growing by the roadside as you drive along, but seeing and finding a safe palce to stop are too different things. Much of the lower areas are fenced off from the road. So best to head off on the tricky mountain roads. Here you will be able to pull over and investigate areas where there is an expanse of suitable ground, and find much of interest. Most of our searching was on the roads between Vieste and Monte SA, on the south facing side. There were places just north of Monte (if fact a but of disused land by the main car park in the town yielded two Ophrys species), but once you are up in the forest forget it, unlesss you are heading for the north side.

Aim to look at sites at different elevations for a range of species too. I would give you some better information but a disc failure has meant I have been rebuilding my orchid logs, but not got to Gargano in that process yet. You should have no difficulty finding places where there are limestone outcrops or wide verges. Drive slow, have a 'spotter', and find safe parking

We are off to a wedding in Torrevieja in the first week of April.
I understand there’s a white form of O collina growing in the salt pans there, does anyone have any info please?
Thanks
Jeff Hodgson

Lesser Twayblade

If anyone would rather see Lesser Twayblade in rather larger and more accessible numbers near Lake Vyrnwy, I'm more than happy to pass on details. As Sean mentions, a bit of a detour but worth it.

Mike

Hello Mike would love to have details please as I live in Shrewsbury & am quite close to the site.
Regards rob
