No-one has started this thread yet so I will kick it off with my cultivated Early Spider Orchid which has just come into bloom. Don't rush off to the wild sites yet though; it has spent the winter sheltered and protected.

I was photographing early spiders at Dancing Ledge on March 1st last year so they should be up now...

Very envious of your Spider orchid Steve. I have Common Spotted and a Fragrant, rosettes now appearing.

Good to see this thread awake!

I spent a wet winter afternoon trying to sort out 'marsh orchid' nomenclature across some of the books on the shelf, and have summarized the results in a web page. Be glad of corrections if anyone has the time and interest to look at it:

Speaking of books, I trust everyone's seen Mike's very handy vegetative guide (congrats to him on this, and on winning the HOS photography prize).

And this forthcoming publication looks interesting...i'm a fan of Bo Mossberg's illustrations.

Mm, I can't wait to get cracking again this year. So many things to see and so little time!

A small RFI at this early juncture before we're all busy looking for British and Irish orchids - I'm going to be spending quite a lot of time in the Aude department of France this spring and summer, and beyond. I've information for a few orchid sites, and of course can't wait to explore and find some for myself, but...

...if anyone has any orchid site details for Aude or the neighbouring areas - either side of the Pyrenees - that they could share with me by PM, I'd be really grateful. All information will be treated in utmost confidence, of course.

Seen a photo of a tiny Green Winged Orchid in flower in Dorset and today some Early Purple just in flower in Kent.
I found Common Twayblades today with 1" tall flower spikes coming up as well. Photos of N. ovata @Barbus59 on Twitter

Virus killing Dactylorhiza's ?

Help/Advice please: Has anyone heard of a virus of some kind which is killing Dacty's in the UK, and which wipes out the majority of a colony?

Took my first foray into North Wales yesterday to see how the Early Purple Orchids were coming on, but only small rosettes visible, hardly surprising as the site is at an elevation of 1200 ft.

Interesting to see last year’s seed heads of Frog Orchid (Dactylorhiza viridis v longibracteatum). This is a much more robust plant than the standard version and these spikes are 40cm tall ( adjusted for the bent-over spike)

Gop Hill

Gop Hill is a south facing hillside in North Wales at an elevation of 800ft in old money. Early Purple and Green-winged just coming into flower yesterday.

Green Winged orchids just starting to flower in North Nottinghamshire.

Beautiful sunny, yet rather draughty, day on the Purbeck coast yesterday.
Thousands of early spiders (although numbers do seem to drop a bit more each year), about 70 green-winged orchids and a handful of early purples in flower.
The usual variety in petal shape, colour and attempts at pelorism amongst the early spiders...and nice to see the swallows returning.
