Dr Günther T. Niethammer (1908–1974) was a German zoologist and ornithologist who after graduating (University of Leipzig, 1933) worked in museums in Berlin, Vienna and Bonn. We infer that he may have travelled in China (1930s) from his co-authorship with Adolf von Jordans of Eine Vogelausbeute aus Fukien (1940). He joined both the Nazi Party and the SS (1937) and then the Waffen SS (1940). He was at Auschwitz, firstly as a guard and then appointed to be the camp ornithologist and published 'Observations on the avifauna of Auschwitz' (1942). He became (1943) a Research Fellow at the Sven Hedin Institute and of an institute concerned with ancestral heritage. After WW2 he was arrested by the Allies (1946) and imprisoned before being extradited to Poland. Here (1948) he was sentenced to 3 to 8 years imprisonment, but was released and returned to Germany (1950) and to his old job at Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn, where he became Head of the Department of Ornithology (1950) and was appointed Professor (1957). He was joint editor with Stresemann of Journal für Ornithologie (1956–1961), then sole editor (1961–1970). He was President of the German Ornithological Society (1968–1973).
