Hi all.

Is this a 3rd calendar year American Herring Gull please - apparent 3rd generation primaries.

Or otherwise?

Thanks again.

Keith

2nd calendar year in july with plenty of bleached old feathers, including outer (juvenile) primaries. not identifiable to species for me, neither on plumage (which is messy as in most moulting summer large gulls) nor conclusively on structure - looks small eyes and short winged but on the other hand female type on proportions. sorry, can't help further.

If it was 3rd-calendar-year (v happy to believe Lou that it isn't), and obviously as-yet unmoulted, the primaries would be 2nd generation/cycle. As an unmoulted 2nd-calendar-year bird, the primaries will be 1st-cycle.
looks small eyes
In this highly-oversharpened image (no offence), I'd place zero faith in that being correctly shown.
