Wildsumaco Lodge?

Hi,

Anyone been to the Wildsumaco Lodge and interested in sharing the experience and thoughts about it?

There's a good possibility that I will do some traveling/birding late January, February of 2009. I enjoyed Ecuador so much last year, I'd like to return - but visit some different lodges and areas.

haven't been there but have heard rave reviews other than one complaint about some crime on a road on the way there. Check the trip reports for Ecuador.

Went there this spring.
Superb lodge, real luxury. You have to take your shoes off before entering the main building so that you don't mark the floor. Not sure what the prices are like.
Owned and run by a Swedish (Danish?) birder called (I think) Jonas Nilsson who has done a great job with trails and so on and guides you if you want it.
Excellent hummingbird feeders.

Thanks for the information. A search for Wildsumaco or wild sumaco in this forum isn't producing any results - except my posting. I think it just opened in the last year.

Steve, how long did you stay? and, how long would you recommend someone staying?

We just stayed one night, effectively one and a half days birding. Two or three nights wold be fine.
It gives you a drive of about three hours down to Coca.

Hello to all:

just a quick update to this thread. myself and 3 others spent 3 nights at Wild Sumaco, July 20, 21 and 22 and had great weather and great birding! Prior to our arrival though they had a rainy spell- (one of ?) the owners, Jim, mentioned that for July-August-September the area experienced "more sun" but was hesitant to fully to commit to a term like "dry season"!

Anyway, the hummer feeders here were quite good, with Jewelfront, Wire-crested thorntail, Sparkling Violetear, Violet-headed, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, etc at the upper feeders by the main lodge, and Napo Sabrewing, Booted Racquet-tail, and Piedtail at the lower feeders a bit back down the road.

The place was "lousy" with Paradise Tanagers, as one participant called it, and many other of the tangaras as well- you could almost just go to one of the plates and tick off the whole page! Fantastic!

We scored our share of ovenbirds, too, including displaying White-backed Fire-eye, Blackish and Black Antbirds, Tiny Hawk, quite a list was racked up on this leg of our journey.

Very comfortable, very clean, basically brand new accomodations with fine materials and workmanship thruout the rooms and main lodge building. Awesome deck overlooking the rainforest falling then rising in waves off toward the Andes... impressive indeed!

Highly recommended!

kind regards to all,
UTC

Just spent 2 nights here on July 6 and 7. was great.

had some good owls and 18 species of hummingbird on the feeder.

Several great trails as well.

cheers,

filip

Same feelings as above here, after visiting last month.
A place that is highly recommended for everything and the birds!
Also visit the website: www.riopucunofoundation.org
Jim and Bonnie (the owners of WildSumaco, together with Jonas Nilsson) are supporting this foundation heavily in order to protect prime foothill forest.
