Are the differences enough to matter? (1 Viewer)

Good day all!

Comparing these two optics:
http://www.telescope.com/control/pr..._tube/~pcategory=telescopes/~product_id=09895
http://www.telescope.com/control/pr...08new/~pcategory=telescopes/~product_id=09927

I would get more focal lenght and less weight(0.9lbs) with the first, but the second optic has a 'faster' f-stop and a hard case. And then there is the matter of $200.00, which could pay for all the 'stuff' needed to make the hook up happen....

Since this optic will not be used for deep sky, not sure if the extra 'speed' is going to make that much of a difference, or is it? Most of my subjects would be sitting still, not like I'd be trying to stop hummingbird wings or something...

Scott (what do you think) B

Go for the first one, it's the scope most of us are using. The second one you will lose 100mm worth of magnification, hence the slightly faster shutter speeds but overall no you wont notice the difference between the two regarding shutter speed or quality of photo.

Thanks Paul....

Follow-up question.

Would the dual-speed focuser be of any use on the EON? (Maybe the subject of the photo didn't land on the pre-focused branch you were hoping for...)

Scott (Paul rules) B

Not really. My first scope had a dual speed focuser and I've not missed it on the 80ED that I have now. I think it's fine enough on the single speed. There is a way around it with a single speed and that is to attach a bigger wheel to one side of the focuser. A bigger wheel gives a much finer adjustment and a smaller wheel makes it turn much quicker. Some people with the 80ED just get a wooden disc or something similar that is maybe 2 or 3 times the diameter of the original and just glue it to the focusing wheel that's already on the scope.

Paul.
