atm65 non-HD with 30x (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

i have a quick question about the atm 65 non-hd scope in relation to the HD version.

i understand that the HD version of the scope gives clearer and sharper views than the standard model, but is this most noticeable only at the top end of the zoom range? (eg 50-60x)

im wondering whether there is much difference realistically between the HD and non-HD scope when using only the 30x wide eyepiece. In other words, because this eyepiece perhaps isnt pushing the scope to its limit as much as a zoom eyepiece at 60x, is there much noticeable difference in daily use?

many thanks!

Andy

Can't tell from my own experience, but I heared several times the opinion that for the 65 the difference between the HD and nonHD was small, while very noticably in the 80 mm.

I have a non-HD Swaro ATS 65 with a 30x eyepiece, and once did a side-by-side with a Swaro ATS 65 HD with a 30x--there was no difference in resolution or detail between the two, however color fringing (CA) was slightly more noticeable on the non HD in high contrast situations. If you don't see CA, (I don't go looking for it!) it shouldn't be a problem. An ATM 65 (the newer ATS 65) will probably have newer better coatings than mine, but I doubt that it will make much difference at 30x.

The 65 mm Swarovski scopes have an unusually "slow" focal ratio of around f/7 so that is probably the reason that the non-HD versions are less susceptible to CA than other achromats.
That 30x eyepiece, BTW, is possibly the best fixed focal length eyepiece available for any birding scope.

Thanks for the responses! That's just what I wanted to know. I hope to try one out soon. It's good to know that detail and resolution is still high!
