Ultrataxa: Ferrier (1984) found that northern populations (NSW/Qld border ranges to Gibraltar Range, NSW) different from the southern (Dorrigo region to Barrington Tops, NSW) as described above.
The southern form, hitherto not formally described, is named after Simon Ferrier who first drew attention to its distinctive features.

Dr Simon Ferrier is an Australian entomologist and environmentalist. The University of Queensland awarded his bachelor's degree (1978) and the University of England NSW his doctorate (1984). He worked the Department of Environment and Climate Change, New South Wales (1985–2008) and then joined CSIRO, Canberra.
