I had a pair for about a year. They were superb in all respects except Field of View, which was about 6.3 degrees, if I remember correctly. The pair I had may have had a very faint yellow cast, but it didn´t affect them quality-wise. I also had a pair of the older Avian (non-F) 10x50, which I loved. These had FOV of only 5.2 degrees (I think), but I preferred them, especially as they had the click-stop eyecups. (The 8x42 Avian F´s didn´t, and I found the eyecups tended to move in and out too easily). I felt that the 10x50 were actually brighter, even at twilight. You can trust Avians optically, and all the reviews are spot-on. Lovely feel to them too, and they´re totally rubber-armoured, nitrogen-purged, BAK4 prisms, all that lark. Big robust focussing wheel is very smooth. I think for the money they are brilliant, if you don´t mind the narrower FOV. (I did, and sold them to mates, and went out and bought Swaro EL´s. Now I have no money and my mates love the Avians I sold them! ) Another good 8x bin I had for a short time was the Opticron Traveller 8x30. This also had FOV of 6.3 degrees, felt nice and good mid-range quality, but its advantage was its incredible compactness. The only "odd" feature was the focussing wheel at the "far" end, you have to use your third or fourth finger to focus. Best of Luck, let us know how you like the Avians if you get them.
An addendum to my recommendation about the Avian 8x42. The friend I sold them to was very happy with them. Recently, she dropped them on a forest path, stony one. I wasn´t there so I didn´t see how hard the impact was. In any case, the entire right-hand front barrel snapped off. The body casing seems to be made of plastic rather than alloy. She sent them off to Ace to assess them, but to be honest I think they´re history. Still great bins, and I imagine she must have given them a fair old whack off the ground to snap the barrel off, but if you´re prone to playing basketball with your bins, you might want to consider something with an alloy body. Although that´ll cost you. Anyway, have you gotten anything yet?
An update on my friend´s Avians. Aceoptics sent them off for assessment, they arrived back to my friend this morning, fully repaired, under guarantee, no charge!!! Superb value, excellent bins, and top-class customer after-sales service.
