Birding In Staffordshire (12 Viewers)

Also had quite a few great tits singing against each other (claiming territories) in the Churnet last week, and my girlfriend has snowdrops in flower in one of her meadows. Anyone else seeing signs of spring?

Adam

Hi Adam,
Early on saturday morning nr Nantwich I was watching G C Grebes displaying in full summer plumage at -5 C!

2X Shorteared Owls showing well late afternoon in the rough fields near to caverswall cricket club whats a new site tick for me :) also a little Egret flew down the blithe and headed over towards caverswall castle ,most probably going to roost, earlier in the day a trip up to Parkhall produced 2 Long Eared Owls , also there were 86 Golden Plover in the top field what isn't bad as last time i was up there i only counted 4 and about 300 sheep were grazing there :( also Green woodpecker was seen 1 Buzzard a couple of willow tit cheers col

Nice walk around Westport this pm. 1m, 3f goldeneye, usual tufties, pochards and GCG on the lake.

Also saw 2 ringed coots. One had a white ring on its left leg, that said ABJ. The other had a yellow ring on its right leg, with a pink ring on top of a blue ring on its left leg. Just about to look up where to report them, unless you Westport lads have beaten me to it?

ABJ was rung at Westport on/around 23 Oct 2011 and probably hasn't left the lake since. Its one of 8 birds which have the new style darvic on as opposed to colour ringing. Pink over dark blue again is a Westport rung bird, and in fact bred in the back last yr. Unfortunately, the young coots didn't come out with colour rings on.

There's always one isn't there :-O And that's after I reworded it!

Adam

Adam you're a star :t:

Having a real battle birding at the minute due to sodding Cateracts. A bit of a hindrance, it's like going fishing without a rod!

A walk around Keele uni lakes produced a couple of blurred Dabchicks, Treecreeper, Nuthatch and plenty of Golcrests.

Cataracts ?

BTO Breeding Bird Survey

Hi Everyone,

the local organiser of the BTO Breeding Bird Survey is looking for volunteers, for this seasons survey.

Only two early morning visits to a grid square are required, between mid April & mid June.

Recording and submitting records is easy, via the BTO website or by post.

The information is very valuable to help, in the monitoring of our breeding bird populations and is also a rewarding way of birding a new site, from an individual perspective.

If you're interested in covering a grid square, please see the attached file for available grid squares all over Staffs. For further details, the local BTO organiser will welcome your enquiry. [email protected]>

All the Best

Rob

Lesser Redpoll numbers building steadily in the garden with 7 this morning, will be keeping a lookout for the Commom/Mealy again this year...hopefully it will return. 14 Goldfinches, 8 Bullfinches, 2 Chaffinches, Blue. Great. Coal and LT tits and 1 Marsh tit again. Robin and Wren with a couple of Dunnocks.

Hi Neil
Hope your well mate, best wishes for the new year.

Did you get the Mealy back? Unfortunatly mine hasnt returned this winter but the Lessers are upto around the 35 mark. I guess there is still a little time.

Hi Dave, hope you are well and have a good Christmas and New Year. Lessers only around 15 at the moment, there was a strange looking one in the other day with a solid grey back and primaries with very minor streaking to the upper part of the back....Fingers crossed.

Has anyone any contact details for Dave Scattergood please or if you're listening, can you get in touch with me please Dave. PM with contact details please.

Upper Blithe

Despite the theft of two feeders at the feeding station, it was busy this morning with the visit of jay, nuthatch, bullfinch, greenfinch,GS woodpecker, willow tit, coal tit and 18 long tailed tit 9 of which managed to get on the fat ball feeder there were three treecreeper close by and still many redwing foraging through the woodland. There was a kingfisher at Heathcote bridge further downstream and within 20 minutes of putting another nestbox up it was being inspected by both great and blue tits, not seen that before. This evening on the caverswall marsh the two short eared owls still present flushing more than one snipe.:t:

Hybrid Goose

This unusual hybrid goose turned up at Westport this morning, anyone any ideas as to what sort of hybrid it is, I've had a scout around the net and the best I can come up with is Bar-headed x Barnacle or Bar-headed x Emperor, any thoughts?
