Of interest...

  • Wilkinson & He Fen-qi 2010. Asian Enigmas: Yellow-throated Laughingthrush Garrulax galbanus and Blue-crowned Laughingthrush G. courtoisi – new observations and interpretations on their taxonomy. BirdingASIA 14: 73-82.

    Conclusions include:
...simaoensis and courtoisi remain very difficult to distinguish and we cannot be certain what subspecies we have in captivity or indeed whether the two subspecies are valid. It may be preferable to be cautious in lumping these until and if more knowledge becomes available – hopefully as a result of the rediscovery of simaoensis in the wild – and contra our previous concerns and the synonymisation by Collar & Robson (2007) we suggest that it may be more precautionary, as in China and Collar (2006), to retain simaoensis as a subspecies of Garrulax courtoisi.

  • Inskipp, Collar & Pilgrim 2010. Taxonomic Update: Species-level and other changes suggested for Asian birds, 2009. BirdingASIA 14: 59-67.
