Birds in Cumbria (3 Viewers)

Walney has got to be on your radar at some point: http://www.birdforum.net/opus/Walney_Island

A bit of a drive as a day trip, but assuming you are driving up the M6, then a short diversion to Leighton Moss RSPB would be worthwhile: http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/l/leightonmoss/index.aspx

The release of the first 30 or so Red Kites in Grizedale should have happened by then too, so if you want to see them, then check here for the latest news: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/newsrele.nsf/WebNewsReleases/C640F339D3498882802577620044C0D5

Enjoy your visit :t:

Hi Steve

Many thanks for your quick reply. I had forgotten Walney. Thanks for the reminder.

I was lucky enough to spot two Ospreys at Foulshaw Moss earlier on in the week. Not sure if they were a pair or just siblings. The first Osprey shot shows one of them carrying a twig. I returned the next day but only managed to see one Osprey. Part 2 will be coming out as soon as I've edited it!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIw3csBsbok

in the car park to Sizergh, or behind the pub jus before the entrance to Siizergh.. 5-12 birds i thin i heard recently...put some time in they will turn up...

Gate to the car park is usually closed so park on road to carpark and sit in cafe area...they should be around... good luck..

Can anybody tell me if there is much chance of seeing the Golden Eagle around High Street at this time of year? I'm off up there tomorrow probably, via Riggindale Crag. Any tips for seeing it? Also is there anything else I can expect in the area (Ring Ouzel etc.)?

Thanks for any help.

I notice from the sightings book at Hay Bridge Nature Reserve (near Ulverston) that ospreys have been regularly seen in the Rusland valley. Passing Esthwaite Water this morning I see that the fishing boat hire premises promote their business as 'fishing with the ospreys'. My wife spoke with someone who was fishing Esthwaite yesterday (4th Aug) and reported two ospreys at the lake, one actively fishing there. I will try to find time for a look into this............ it sounds promising.

Could anyone tell me if the 50 or so Barnacle Geese at Ullswater on Saturday are wild or resident

Cheers
Dave

Smashing sight whatever

I quite agree. Not sure how long they've been there but I saw them about 5 years ago and suspect they've increased their numbers. Plenty of local food from the visitors too!

There's a similar sized flock on Derwentwater, and I saw a group of 10 (presumably part of this flock) on Bassenthwaite a few weeks back.

This sort of thing is so sad.I hope this eagle survives in the wild ,but very doubtful.
We had an Eagle Owl escape from the local prison-yes,this is true, may sound very corny.!!!!There is a falconry section,at HMP Haverigg, and this Eagle Owl escaped.I do have a photo of him taken on a local roof.I phoned the relevant dept at the prison and they did not respond, just left this poor bird to fend for himself. The last we heard he was decimating the local pigeon population in our old industrial estate. This ,I may add was several yrs ago.
It does make me cross,to think that these birds are kept in captivity, then when there are mishaps it is the bird which suffers.

The bird is still missing as of today (Friday 20th August) and the owners are obviously keen to hear of further sightings.

Furthermore, two days before the escape a sea eagle was reported to the moderator of the Yahoo BirdingCumbria . The bird was apparently seen being mobbed by buzzards from the A66 between Workington and Cockermouth and came from a fellow birder (i.e. a reliable source).

This wouldn't be the first time a sea eagle has been recorded in this part of the of the county as can be seen from further down this thread.

Could be two ticks if anyone is really lucky!

Should anyone tick a Bald Eagle.............:eek!:

Great news :t:

It's easy to become angry when things go wrong. These places are a lot about education these days. Education promotes care - especially to the next generation, without which there's no future for any wildlife.
