Pretty certain of the ID but what is with the Grass Snake like marking on the neck? This is / was a youngster, only 7-8 inches long, is this marking a feature of juveniles?

This approximately, foot long animal was on the road as I walked home last night. I was able to encourage it away from where it would have been killed but not without it getting aggressive and actually pursuing me for 3-4m along the road. There is one patch of road I have to walk which is not lit and I traverse that bit with some trepidation as these animals are common, if there was one here I wouldn't see it.

Here's a bit of vid though it's not doing much.

Can we call this a male based on the longish, thin tail, I know it applies to Adders?
