BOU Brit List 9th March 2016 (1 Viewer)

I have just gone through the new BOU British List as issued on the 9th March 2016.

There are four groups that have been reordered Plovers, Warblers, Larks and Buntings and there are also name changes.

Little Crake Zapornia parva
Baillon's Crake Zapornia pusilla
White-winged Lark Alauda leucoptera
Lesser Short-toed Lark Alaudala rufescens

There is one typo.. Black-eared Wheatear appears as "Black-eafdumetorumed Wheatear"

Are these changes due to the BOU now adopting the IOC Taxonomy or are we due another round of reordering of the British List.
If anyone wants an Excel version I can send you one.
Cheers

So in the main, and yet again, American names prevail, Mew Gull, Lapland Longspur, Boreal owl, Murres etc, etc

That's one to take up with IOC; can be worth doing, as unlike many other groups, they do listen to users.

I'm hoping that 'Mew Gull' at least will disappear before long as it's likely to get split following that Dutch Birding article.

Well, BOURC has listed both the British vernacular name and the IOC international English name for several years now. Nothing new there.

And, to be fair, American names don't always prevail with IOC: Black-necked (vs Eared) Grebe, Rough-legged Buzzard (vs Hawk), Grey (vs Black-bellied) Plover, Pomarine Skua (vs Jaeger), Little Auk (vs Dovekie), Rock Dove (vs Pigeon), Pacific (vs Fork-tailed) Swift, Great Grey (vs Northern) Shrike, Western (vs Eurasian) Jackdaw, Eurasian Skylark (vs Sky Lark), Sand Martin (vs Bank Swallow), Common (vs European) Starling, Buff-bellied (vs American) Pipit, Arctic (vs Hoary) Redpoll, Two-barred (vs White-winged) Crossbill, Pallas's Reed Bunting (vs Bunting), grey (vs gray), non-hyphenated (vs hyphenated) compound names. All-in-all, probably a reasonable balance...
