BOW Key (1 Viewer)

I find all kind of mistakes. For instance, there are names in volume 16 (the index) of Peters that are wrongly spelled but that are correct in the pages to which they point, like Accipter, Aboricola, Aborophila. Unless you want them I will ignore these; PCL-index-only seems too rare a variant.

Most of these are variants, none is searchable as-is in the Key.
From Peters.

Anadorhynchus v3:180
Ancylochilus v2:282
Neositella v7:145
Philhydra v11:270
Lophopanes v12:70
Arachnorhaphis v12:282
Acanthogenys v12:444
Eupodoces v15:254

These epitheta probably gender-agreed away from under the KEY index:

lombokium IOC 14.1 Sugomel lombokium (Mathews, 1926)
tenuifasciata IOC 14.1 Ketupa sumatrana tenuifasciata (Mees, 1964)
astrictocarpa H&M 4.1 Zapornia astrictocarpa ?Olson, 1973?
maculipecta H&M 4.1 Ianthocincla ocellata maculipecta (Hachisuka, M, 1953)

The Key has (under 'manacus'):
Dutch manneken pretty little thing
That seems wrong to me, a Dutch native speaker. In Dutch manneken (also: mannetje) just means: 'little man'. Other meanings include 'male animal', but nothing like 'pretty little thing'.
Note that the Dutch word manneken (as well as the earlier mannekijn alt. mannekîn) indeed has the meaning "Little man" (sometimes also interpreted as "doll", alt. "Small figure", as in a diminutive of Man/n), and it's equally the very origin of the English Common name Manakin (and the earlier Manikin), for various species in Pipridae*.

The same word (even if somewhat off-topic) has also given us Swedes the word mannekäng (as in mannequin/model) ;)

Björn

*Simply following the Common/Vernacular name 'type' [White-bearded] Manakin Manacus manacus LINNAEUS 1766, as "[Pipra] manacus").

Working on the index of Peters' Check-list makes me wonder what the status is of "names" that are apparent typos but that are only in the index of a work. (That they /are/ typos, and what taxon they denote becomes clear when you look at the text on the page they point to). Can such names still be used in (future) zoological naming, or are they somehow tainted (synonymised?) by being "published" in this way? There are many (100+) of these names.
(PS: obviously, I don't mean the OCR-errors in BHL files; I mean the names as printed)

Thanks,

To make The Key comprehensive the misspellings/variants which appear in the literature should be listed. Perhaps a hidden gem will be revealed?!

These names from the Index of Peters (=volume 16, but also on the actual pages) are all unfindable in the Key. Some (most, I think) are present in entries of the Key, at least some are not. I'd like to know but it's probably a little difficult to keep track. However, I hope you let me know when there is a new one for the Key ('new' like Pseudoxenops was). Thank you.

Campylirhynchus - v9:379 - v.9 (1960) - Check-list of birds of the world - Biodiversity Heritage Library -- not preoccupied by

Erikjan,

Thanks for this latest contribution. Two are non-avian: Campylirhynchus Dejean, 1821, is in Coleoptera; Triphaena Ochsenheimer, 1816, in Lepidoptera. Chlorilaema is a new specific name (i.e. chlorilaema — q.v.). I am treating both Anthocichla and Thaumatius as novelties also. The rest are lapses now entered in my editorial box, and thus shown in the alpha list.

Tryphaena, the bird, had already "Not Triphaena Ochsenheimer, 1816, Lepidoptera" in its text so it seemed logical to give it an index-entrance too.
(this was not the case for the duo Campylorhynchus / Campylirhynchus - I apparently forgot to check)

Great! Thank you.

There is also Neave's Nomenclator Zoologicus. These are names from 'Aves.' lines from the first 80 pages that The Key doesn't have an answer for:

Aethurus (pro Aithurus Cabanis & Heine 1860) Simon 1897, Cat. Troch., 24.-Aves.
Aenanthus (pro Oenanthe Vieillot 1816) Giebel 1872, Thesaur. Orn., 1, 277.-Aves.
Aegithine (pro -na Vieillot 1816) Giebel 1872, Thesaur. Orn., 1, 276.-Aves.
Aegipius (pro Aegypius Savigny 1809) Giebel 1872, Thesaur. Orn., 1, 277.-Aves.
Adrea (err. pro Ardea L. 1758) Brown 1832, Zool. Text Book, 1, 250.-Aves.
Adelopes Dupont 1826, Ann. Sci. nat. Paris, 9 (34), 187.-Aves.
Acridoteres (pro -theres Vieillot 1816) Dumont 1821, Dict. Sci. Nat., 19, 247.-Aves.
Acnemius (pro -mis Kaup 1848) Giebel 1872, Thesaur. Orn., 1, 265.-Aves.
Acestura (pro Acestrura Gould 1861) Giebel 1877, Thesaur. Orn.. 3, 669, 685.-Aves.
Acanthopus (pro Agathopus Sclater 1858) Giebel 1872, Thesaur. Orn., 1, 260.-Aves.
Aegialornis Lydekker 1891, Cat. foss. Birds Brit. Mus., 183.-Aves.
Abdinnia (err. pro Abdimia Bonaparte) Giebel 1872, Thesaur. Orn., 1, 255.-Aves.

There's more where that came from, that is clear. Another backburner project.

Interesting little group, especially Adelopes Dupont, which I am investigating further.
EDIT: I have just noticed Acanthopus Giebel - but going through his Thesaurus Ornithologiae is the true path to madness!
EDIT 2: Aegialornis Lydekker is from the Eocene, too early for inclusion in The Key.

Finsch and Hartlaub are also quite unimpressed :).
(in German)

Maybe it would make sense to just skip all his names. (/more than half/ in the sample above)

Here are some more absentees from The Key out of the synonymy of Peters' Check-list. As usual, many sic's, and even one double sic (only now do I notice that 'erathrolaema' is also not in the Key).

I added the 'containing' name - but that will be clear.
