A few weeks ago a friend asked me if the birds which were feeding in my garden only ate seed as this is what I am feeding. I told him, no, because many eat worms, grubs etc. I did not realise until today that a British Blackbird would attack and eat a frog!
The frog was obviously a 2007 model, measuring about an inch to inch and a half when fully stretched out. I saw a male blackbird attacking it and it was trying to escape into some dense cover on the edge of my garden. I watched as the frog was finally overcome and the bird was doing the usual 'Peck and shake' in order to break it into smaller pieces ready to swallow.
Unfortunately before I could witness the actual eating a collared dove landed close by and the blackbird carried the dead frog behind a bush and became invisible. I later went to see if I could find the remains of the frog but could not, so I assume that the bird ate it.
Just goes to prove - never too old to learn!
