Common Buzzard - Latvia yesterday (1 Viewer)

Dear Members and bird watchers!

This bird is ID as a Common Buzzard because of the brown wing with white feathers and the black band. Anyone disagree?

The second picture, I throw it in risking to make a total tit out of myself.

Was on a sand hill, size like a blackbird. But when I should take the picture it was covered in grass. Then it disappeared.

Anyone that can say what kind of bird this is?

Kind Regards and Happy Birding
Aladdin

Yes a common buzzard for the first picture, second a lark sp (with such a distinct super I would be inclined to suggest woodlark, any more images?).
Thank you Bewick!

I am sorry to say that there is no more pictures. The bird took off and I could never see it again.

Thanks for the help, highly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Aladdin

1. The most useful plumage feature might be the whitish U-shaped band on the underbody.
2. The 'grass' is a horsetail Equisetum (ie not grass).
Thank you Butty!

Never thought about the U-shaped band before. I checked the picture and this U-shaped band is very clear.

Something I will look for in the future.

Cheers, appreciated and I hope I get use for this knowledge soon

Kind Regards
Aladdin

Hello,
agree with Bewick about the Lark.
But if forced, I would opt for a Skylark: supercilium gets narrower towards the nape, broad bridled eyering seems better for a Skylark.
Crested Lark is eliminated by lack oft crest? =More pictures please
Thank you Alexander Stöhr!

There is Skylarks in the area, quite a few of them to.

Thanks for the help! Appreciated

Kind Regards
Aladdin
