I assume that was near your house? A brilliant shot - you're far too modest. Just remind us, what is your set up exactly?

Peter, set-up is Canon D60 with EF 100/400mm zoom IS Lens. This shot was made hand held in late afternoon. - Mike

Sorry to be a bit confused Mike. Your first post said 600mm, then later you said it was a 100/400mm lens. I know that when you are using a Digital SLR which doesn't have a full-frame sensor the focal length of the lens isn't the same as it would be for 35mm film, but that wouldn't explain the discrepancy would it - as it would effectively be shortened? Or am I talking a load of b******s. I don't have a digital SLR of course!

Stunning photo Medlock. If this is a reasonable shot I can't wait until you take a good one.

Andrew

I doubt very much if Hobbies are here yet. We have a little while to go before we start to enjoy watching those beauties.

John,

Thanks for the tip off, it was a smallish bird of prey with long swallow like wings projecting down behind it's body. It was a shilouette thus making it hard for me to identify it. Do you think the odds are on Merlin?

Very good chance. We thought we saw one today as well but it was so fast that it had disappeared before we could really lock onto it.

What was your impression on size?

The lens is a 100/400 when used with a 35mm camera. Because of the D60's sensor size it has a multiplier of 1.6 therefore the 400 mm lens is the equivalent to 640mm when mounted on the D60. - Mike

That's a beaut!

Andrew, def'ly a merlin. Hobbies won't be here for a coupla months and merlins come down from the moors in winter to farmland to hunt.

John & Monkeyman,

It was about the size of a ruler so I'd say 28 to 32 cm long from head to tail. A small bird of prey, if I had seen the plumage with the light behind I would have got it but I'm not good with silhouettes! However it definitely had bluish back and brownish front.

Andrew

The male Sparrowhawk could just about get into that size bracket but the silhoette would give it away. The Kestrel would be an easy bird to pick out so I can't see it being anything else other than a Merlin

After 'hearing' so many people from the UK talking about dunnocks.... I finally get to see one. Fabulous! Thanks Medlock!

Lovely photo Mike.
I've recently bought a D60 and am looking at the 100-400mm, how are you finding its use generally?
