Hi all.

Just bought these 3 days ago,UK retailer, just noticed a piece of dust behind the objective lens looking in from front.

Should this be acceptable or not? Pretty peeved as these are waterproof and dust proof.

Has anyone else ever had this or should I return to shop and will they accept back for dust?

Thanks Gary

Had it in my EL, got it repaired under warranty when it was back for the armour repair. Didnt affect the optical performance so didn’t bother with sending it back to the retailer or for a standalone repair

Thanks, it doesn't affect anything but I'm quite anal about stupid things like that and figure if there meant to be dust proof then there shouldn't be any there in the first place. Thanks for reply Gary

Gary, if they were purchased brand new, tell the retailer you'd like them exchanged, and if they're a used example, ask them to send them to Swarovski to be repaired for you, or return them for a full refund.

This is absolutely your right and is correct procedure. Your new babies should be perfect and dust/particle free internally, especially if such things are important to you.

I'm equally anal about 'stupid things like that'! 😉

PS As a matter of interest, which LCE branch did you purchase from?

If the dust is behind the objective, it will be at infinite focus and unnoticeable. The dust particle may well detach and fall off with time. Sending the binoculars off to Swarovski means them opening the binoculars up and risking further dust getting in, or other damage. My view is that it is not worth worrying about. Just enjoy the binoculars (which are great, I have a pair myself).

I agree 100% !!!! Unacceptable to buy this brand with a defect !
Purchased 3 days ago, on my side, 2 choices : Exchange or refund !

From Derby mate.

Replace or refund. Full stop.

Do not accept a repair, you have bought brand new and should not have to wait x-weeks for them to be sent to Austria and, in the (un) likely possibility of it detaching, it will re-appear somewhere else.

You will be looking for that bit of dust every time you put those bino’s to your eyes.

In fact, come to think of it, I have some dust in my 8x42 NL Pure. I too had that sinking feeling when I first saw it, but then I used the binoculars, came to appreciate them, and forgot about it.

Are you sure it is not fungus? If moisture enters the binocular it can result in fungal growth.

I would return them to the retailer and let them deal with the problem.

Just been able to work out from this comment on a different thread that this item was indeed apparently new.

Given this fact, there's no way I'd personally be satisfied with anything other than a full and immediate refund or replacement.

I'd be fairly confident the relevant law is on your side - you have a 30-day 'Right to Reject' and the crux in this case seemingly lies in the definition of Satisfactory Quality.

"Goods shouldn't be faulty or damaged when you receive them. You should ask yourself what a reasonable person would consider satisfactory for the goods in question. For example, bargain-bucket products won't be held to as high standards as luxury goods."

I'd argue that that a product like a CL Pocket is marketed as a product of the very highest standard, and should therefore not have random foreign objects at liberty to float around in the optical train.

See this link for more details.

Thanks, I shall refer to this if needed, going them in a minute to see what they say.👍

The 8x25 CL is filled with an inert gas (N2?) and waterproof to 400 mbar. Unless they are completely compromised, there is no way glass fungus can enter/grow in there.

Update..

Great customer service, got another pair for me, the optics were spot on, but unfortunately the rubber around the top left under where for eyecup sits was coming away from the body, and quite loose.. I really don't understand when your buying a premium product how these things can get past quality control.. Hence they offered a refund which I accepted.
I will look online and maybe even consider the Zeiss victory.

Thanks all appreciated your replies.

Why can’t they check them before they ship
From the dealer?

Has something changed at swarovski?
I don't think it's unique to Swarovski. There have been some very simple QC complaints in the last few years about new Zeiss and Leica bins as well, that one wouldn't have expected just a decade ago. It does raise the question what one is still paying such prices for these days.
