Falkland Islands and Patagonia (1 Viewer)

Is anyone interested in birding the Falkland Islands and Patagonia in Chile? One week in each place. I am thinking of late January or possibly Feb or Mar. There are five species of penguins in the Falklands, and lots of other species are found only in the far south.

Oops, yes, it should be Patagonia. I also want to go to Pantanal, but not on this trip. There are too many trips on my bucket list. How can I change the title?

Hi Jay,
Are you still going? Or did you already?
Do you have a budget in mind?
Are You planning to take any cruise/boat trips while you are there?
I've always dreamed about seeing penguins and Falklands are on my bucket list.

I have booked the trip in January. Three days on Sea Lion Island, a bit south of the main Falkland Islands. Then, Four days in the Falkland Islands with a guided tour each day. Then a tour of Patagonia, tierra del fuego and Tores del Paine National Park. I hope to see at least five species of penguins and many other birds, some quite interesting, such as sheathbills and Giant Petrels. Look up Tores del Paine in Google, It is stunning. In addition to birds, there is a good chance to see the giant Elephant Seals on Sea Lion Island and Mountain Lions (aka Puma) at Torres del Paine. After the guided tour, I will stay for another week in southern Chile to explore independently. You can join me in Chile. You could also join me in the Falkland Islands, but that depends on whether or not accommodations are still available. No cruises, but I will take a day trip to a penguin colony on an island in the Strait of Magellan. The tours are not cheap but include accommodations, vehicle, English-speaking guides, meals, park entrance fees, etc. I will stay at an inexpensive Airbnb for the week on my own. It's better than a trip to Antarctica, which costs $10,000 after getting to southern South America, and you spend only a short time there and might see only one species of penguin. The main cost of going to Antarctica is the cruise. On my trip, we can stay in nice hotels and go birding on our own when not with a guide. Lots of birds are to be seen around the waterfront in the Falklands. If you are still interested, send me a message, and I will send you the links for detailed information.

Hey Jay. Just wanted to share that I’m doing Tierra del Fuego (as well as Cordoba, El Calafate, Strobel Plateau for Hooded Grebe, Mendoza and Valdés peninsula) but not a cruise this time around leaving this week so you can follow my sightings on eBird which might help with planning. Good luck with your trip!

No, unfortunately given that there were no specialty birds I didn’t prioritize that area despite how spectacular it is scenically. The closest I am getting is the Sofia lake hike at cueva del milodón for Striped Woodpecker. The one site that was appetizing in retrospect but I only got gen on too late to allocate days to is the Fuegian Snipe at Monte Tarn south of Punta Arenas (usually requires an elaborate logistical expedition to remote islands).

I’m not pseudonymous. Username is the same: Daniele Mitchell. Keep an eye out on new year’s in the area you’re travelling to as the first ten days will be in the central zones

I spent four days in Ushiaia Tierra Del Fuego Dec 7-11. I had 3 penguin species on Isla Martillo there, and 69 species overall. Used Uber to get around and public transport. My ebird name is "mclay100"
