fungus on Nikon 300mm f4 if-ed (1 Viewer)

Hello,
I am writing in the hope there is someone out there that might be able to pass on some of their experience or give some advice
I have the above lens which is in great condition except recently, I peered down the barrel and notices a couple of the glass elements are significantly affected by fungus. Especially the one closest to the end. Now I realize why the image quality has not been too good.
This is of course, quite an old model of lens. I imagine it would not be worth the expense to have it serviced professionally. My thought have turned to the possibility I might do it myself . Not that I have any experience at all. I guess I might possibly ruin the lens completely. However I suppose there is nothing to lose as the lens isnt much use as it stands at present.
I am wondering : would the lens have to be dismantled from the base onward. Alternatively would I be able to do it by working from the lens hood end. The lens hood is fixed onto the lens with this model. One extends the hood manually and twists to fix it in plafe. I can see that once one extends the lens hood a couple of tiny screws can be seen. I would be glad to know whether, if I remove these screws, the top of the lens can then twist off, giving access to the glass element(s) underneath.
If anyone does have any experience of this nature to share in regard to this or similar model of lens, I would be most grateful. I understand this might be a long shot.
Thank you.
